Let Me Make You Smile, Girl

Lyrics and Backstory

Lyrics

I just can't figure it out.
You're very wonderful and you let it show.
And there really isn't a doubt,
You're just about the prettiest girl I know.

And yet you always seem to be so sad.
I can't believe that things could be that bad.

You must have plenty of friends,
Who wouldn't ever let you be lonely, girl.
Plus guys who spare no expense
To let you know that you are their only girl.

So many girls would love to take your place.
Yet you so seldom wear a happy face.

I don't like seeing you frown.
You look like you're on trial, girl!
Don't let the world get you down.
C'mon, let me see you smile, girl!

I'd really like to succeed
In finding out what causes your smile to hide.
Could it be that you have a need,
That there is something missing deep down inside?

If love is what you need so desperately,
Then maybe all you really need is me.

Time will not alter my stance,
The only dream I have is to be your man.
Aw, girl, please give me a chance,
'Cause I can make you happy, I know I can!

I'll stand beside you, girl, through thick and thin,
And do the best I can to make you grin.

I can't stand watching you frown.
That's just not my style, girl.
I wanna help you turn it around.
C'mon, let me make you smile, girl!

I don't like seeing you frown.
C'mon, let me make you smile, girl!
I wanna help you turn it around.
C'mon, let me make you smile, girl!
I can't stand seeing you frown.
C'mon, let me make you smile, girl!
I wanna help you turn it around.
C'mon, let me make you smile, girl!

Backstory

In my first Sunday School class in the summer of 1973 there was a pretty, quiet girl who didn't smile much. Her name was Laurie. During the 1979-80 school year, when she was a high school senior, we both sang in the church choir. She had grown from a pretty girl to a lovely young woman, and was a bit more outgoing by this point, but she still often looked like she wasn't very happy. I was 26 then, way too old for her, but part of me wished I could sweep her off her feet and bring many more smiles to her beautiful face. After she graduated in 1980 she moved to Texas, and I haven't seen her since. But during the summer of 1980 my desire to see Laurie happier found an outlet through my songwriting, as I put myself into the character of someone the right age who could have truly fallen in love with her. Over 30 years later, 'Let Me Make You Smile, Girl' is still one of my favorite compositions. One thing I really like about it is how I was able to completely rhyme the lyrics, with the 1st and 3rd lines of each four line group rhyming as well as the 2nd and 4th. I've never managed to do that with any other song, and I'm pretty proud of pulling it off in this one!
